Chloe’s of Middleburg is honored to present a private tour and reception for The Heart of the Turf: Racing’s Black Pioneers at the National Sporting Library & Museum on September 5th. This powerful exhibition shines a long-overdue spotlight on the contributions of African American horsemen and women from the mid-1800s to today.
Two intimate group tours will be led by Claudia Pfeiffer, the George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Deputy Director & Head Curator at the National Sporting Library & Museum. Developed by Keeneland Library and made possible at the NSLM by Virginia Guest Valentine, the exhibition features rare archival photographs and compelling biographical narratives that bring the legacy of these trailblazers vividly to life.
The inspiration for this event grew out of a deeply personal connection. “After attending a lecture on The Heart of the Turf, I left profoundly moved,” said Wendy Osborn, owner of Chloe’s of Middleburg. “I’ve loved horses my whole life. I grew up riding, and in my twenties, I would often drive out to Hunt Country just for the chance to be in the saddle. As a person of color, I know how rare that opportunity has historically been. Experiencing an exhibition that so powerfully honors the legacy of Black horsemen and women was both emotional and affirming. I felt compelled to share it with others who may be equally inspired.”
The National Sporting Library & Museum has long been a pillar of the Hunt Country community—Osborn’s daughter Chloe interned there last summer—and this exhibition marks an important moment in history. “It was incredible to see these stories honored with such care and clarity,” added Osborn, a Rhode Island School of Design graduate and former gallery assistant to legendary gallerist Betty Parsons.
Following the tour, attendees are invited to a reception catered by chef Roderick Pete Smith, who has previously partnered with Chloe’s of Middleburg for its Juneteenth Dinner Celebration. The thoughtfully curated menu pays tribute to Southern culinary tradition with dishes such as Petite Hot Browns, Kentucky Fried Chicken Skewers, Benedictine Tea Sandwiches, and Bread Pudding with Bourbon Caramel Sauce. The afternoon will conclude with shopping at Chloe’s of Middleburg.
